Immunotactoid Glomerulopathy

An immunotactoid glomerulopathy is a rare kidney disease that affects the glomerulus, where blood and waste are filtered. Microtubule proteins cause damage to the glomerulus. Blood and protein can be found in urine (hematuria and proteinuria, respectively), causing urine to appear red or foamy. There are also symptoms such as a decrease in kidney function (renal insufficiency), swelling in the legs or feet, and high blood pressure (hypertension). It is diagnosed with a kidney biopsy. There is no exact cause for this disorder, but most commonly it is found in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), B cell lymphomas, and multiple myelomas.

Symptoms of immunotactoid glomerulopathy include:

  • Hematuria (blood in the urine)
  • Proteinuria (Protein in the urine causes it to look foamy)
  • Renal insufficiency (loss of kidney function)
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)

Causes

There is currently no known cause of immunotactoid glomerulopathy.

Affected Populations

A person with a history of leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, or another monoclonal gammopathy is most likely to develop immunotactoid glomerulopathy. Immunotactoid glomerulopathy may also be associated with a previous hepatitis C infection. Many cases, however, have no known cause and no identifiable underlying disease.
