Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder

ASP Health Support Programs for Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder

Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder

Auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder, or ANSD, is a relatively new condition that results in hearing loss. It can affect your ability to hear speech properly and completely understand it.

The sensorineural means this disorder is due to damage in the inner ear, auditory nerve, or connection between the nerve and brain. Thus, sound enters the ear but isn't adequately transmitted to the brain.

ASP Health provides resources to help patients get approved for their prescription drugs and/or medical equipment by connecting them with assistance programs funded by pharmaceutical companies or government programs.

Signs and Symptoms

You should consult a doctor if you notice any or all of the following symptoms as a parent.

  • Loud noises don't affect your child's behavior.
  • Your baby cannot laugh, babble, or coo by eight months of age.
  • A baby who is twelve months old does not attempt to mimic sounds and movements around him or her.

Causes

This condition can be caused by defects in the inner hair cells, the auditory nerve, or the nerve-brain connection.

An acquired ANSD can be caused by several factors, either present at birth or afterward, such as:

  • Prematurity (<28 weeks) and low birth weight
  • Elevated bilirubin in the blood causes jaundice
  • Oxygen deficiency or inadequate oxygen supply to tissues
  • Congenital brain abnormalities
  • Intracranial hemorrhage
  • Family history of ANSD
  • A drug that causes ear damage

Affected Populations

Approximately one to three children per 10,000 births are affected by this disorder. It can occur at any age.
